On the perfect day, with the right vantage point, the sunset at Scripps Pier is arguably the most impressive sunset you can capture in San Diego, CA. Nestled at the bottom of the hill from the UCSD campus, Scripps Pier is a truly welcoming spot, albeit quite a walk from your car!
Depending on the time and day, this spot can be crowded— I recommend setting up shop an hour before the sun starts to set. Bring a tripod, set your focus, lower your ISO, set your aperture to F8 or greater, and take your shot at a lower shutter speed, leaving the lens open for just long enough to capture all of the detail this spot has to offer. It might take you a few captures, but it will be worth it.
